Researchers may have cracked the code in defending against crown rust

Crown rust can cause some big losses for oat growers, and now, researchers may have found a new defense against the disease.

Scientists with the Ag Research Service have released two new oat germ plasms, hoping to prevent fungal disease. The new lines are crossed with other varieties to create genetic resistance to crown rust, which can be a costly problem.

The disease can cause crop losses up to 50 percent in unprotected crops.
