U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is in Hanoi, Vietnam, with a trip to Miyazaki City, Japan, planned for later this week, where he will participate in the G7 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting hosted by Japan.

USDA says Vietnam is a key Southeast Asian partner in the United States’ efforts to deepen trade, address food and nutrition insecurity, support agricultural innovation and combat climate change.

While in Hanoi, the Secretary will meet with the Prime Minister, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Minister of Industry and Trade. He will also meet with private sector trade partners who support U.S. agricultural imports, deliver a speech on USDA’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities to students at the Foreign Trade University, and visit the Vietnam Academy for Forest Sciences to highlight how the U.S. Forest Service collaborates with the Government of Vietnam to prevent the illegal harvest and trade of timber.

Secretary Vilsack will travel to Japan on Friday for the G7 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting. In addition to taking part in the ministerial, the Secretary will deliver the closing keynote at a climate-focused side event, highlighting the United States’ farmer-focused, voluntary, incentive-based approach to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
