Sen. Debbie Stabenow thinks a Farm Bill passage is unlikely

Some leaders on Capitol Hill are still holding out hope that a new Farm Bill can get passed this year, but a top ag lawmaker is now casting doubt.

Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow does not think the House version is likely to pass, and she tells Agri-Pulse she does not want to bring the Senate bill out of committee if it too could fail. This comes after Senate Republicans released their framework just last week, which Stabenow called a “flawed approach.” She has drawn a line at cuts to nutrition and other areas like climate.

Lawmakers have until September to either get a new bill passed or extend the 2018 legislation yet again.
