Spinach growers are having a hard time keeping up with safety regulations

Food safety is important for consumers, and it is an area producers take very seriously. However, for some crops, like spinach, the increased attention can come with a cost.

Texas-based Trio Tres Farms says each customer has their own guidelines, like washing and packaging. They do multiple audits a year, as well as environmental testing, to keep up with all the requirements, but the costs for the tests can add up.

Growers say each production decision has to be weighed, and keeping pace with evolving needs is challenging.
