The Plant Based Food Association has released its voluntary standards for labeling on plant-based yogurt, including ensuring the words “plant-based” or “dairy-free” are in prominent positions.
“As the industry leader in plant-based food advocacy, PBFA has released voluntary labeling standards for plant-based milks in 2018 and plant-based meats in 2019 and will continue to release additional standards for other categories,” the organization said in a release.
However, the announcement and voluntary standards were insufficient, according to the National Milk Producers Federation.
“Putting forth a voluntary standard that simply codifies illegal behavior does nothing more than allow malefactors to pick and choose whether they feel like following the law, depending on their perceived marketing gain,” NMFP Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Clay Detlefsen said.
