Hilltown Police in Pennsylvania rescued a horse from a barn fire in late July, and the entire thing was caught on body camera video.
According to a police news release, the officers arrived at Red Wing Farm on July 23 and immediately saw large barn enveloped in heavy smoke. People at the scene alerted the officers that there was a still a horse in the barn.
“The adrenaline was pumping,” Officer Kristian Hanus told CBSPhilly.
Both Hanus and the other responding officer, Matthew Reiss, had zero experience with horses and relied on instincts to get the horse to safety with the help of a farm worker. Both officers had minor injuries.
“She was definitely terrified, the cops were fantastic though, they jumped right in,” Lena Obernesser, a riding instructor at Red Wing Farm, told CBSPhilly. “I saw the footage and I was just in awe. Like, oh my God, thank God they were here.”
The farm’s owner said a family friend helped get the other horses out prior to the officer’s arrival, suffering second and third-degree burns in the process.
Six EMS units from nearby Bucks and Montgomery Counties responded to the two-alarm fire. Eight people were treated at the scene and four of them were transported to area hospitals. All of the horses and humans are expected to make a full recovery.
