The bison industry has a newly chartered Center of Excellence for Bison Studies, which grew out of a need for research.
The Center focuses on bison health and their interaction in the grasslands in order to develop a high quality, consistent meat product.
It is a partnership between bison and buffalo groups and South Dakota State University. The National Bison Association sent out a request for research proposals and Executive Director Dave Carter said that they received several options.
According to Carter, “We divided them up into about five categories of bison health, genetics, or bison in the environment in tribal, hoping to stimulate more production in tribal herds and then also meat quality and marketing the bison.”
Recent funding rounds resulted in more than $140,000 dollars in grant money for the research.
