A California ag start-up plans to open an indoor vertical farm to bring more jobs and fresh produce to the city of Compton.
The company behind the project, Plenty, will condense 700 acres of farmland into a 95,000 square foot (that’s only about 2.2 acres!) facility. The company says it will be its largest vertical operation, and will help establish farms in urban areas, where food insecurity is widespread.
Plenty plans to hire 50 full-time employees from Compton and to partner with the local school district to teach students about agriculture.
The new farm will be complete by the end of the year and will service more than 100 grocery stores.
