Follow the Way it’s Written: Dairy groups are pleased with the recent USMCA ruling

Dairy groups are applauding the recent decision that Canada improperly restricted access for U.S. dairy producers.

The ruling is the first under the updated USMCA trade agreement.

National Milk Producers Federation says that much of the new, small access the U.S. gained during negotiations was being given to Canadian producers. “When the Canadian government was doing that, they were preventing the U.S. from selling the high-value product directly to retail or restaurants,” Jamie Castanado explains. “The processors were not buying everything the negotiations permitted.”

As a result, American dairy producers and exporters have not been able to fully use USMCA’s benefits, but when it is followed the way it is written, U.S. producers will significantly benefit.
