The U.S. could become a net importer in the long-term. USDA says America’s preference for fresh foods year-round will drive a $100 billion dollar increase in food and ag imports in the future.
Economists released a 10-year ag baseline, ahead of today’s Ag Outlook Forum, predicting imports will rise by 6 percent per year. They also expect consumer spending to remain strong over the next decade, with horticulture being the highest-growth sector, like fruits, veggies, wine and beer.
