USDA is accepting applications to provide local food for school meals.
The program will provide $200 million in funding for states. They can use it to purchase local food that is healthy, nutritious and unique to their geographic area. Secretary Vilsack says it will also expand economic opportunity for the areas.
He says, “This program is another example of how USDA is working to build a more resilient food system rooted in local and regional production where small can compete against big.”
Farmers and ranchers must live within 400 miles of the school they serve.
