California’s Water Shortage is Affecting Agriculture Jobs

Thousands of agriculture jobs could be at risk due to uncertain water supplies in Central California.

A study by Michael Shires with Pepperdine University shows many growers rely on water from the Westland’s Water District, which generates $5 billion in economic activity and 35,000 jobs across the region.

Making matters worse, the Sierra Nevada snow pack is at 59% of normal for this time of year. Officials say another dry year will cause a 5-10% reduction in crop plantings, which could lead to national food security issues.
