A new study shows the impact barley has on Idaho. The study was paid for by the Idaho Barley Commission and shows that the industry contributes nearly $275 million dollars to the annual gross state product.
It also supports 2,700 jobs. Last year, the pandemic and drought were a challenge, costing more than 500 jobs.
The study was mainly for lawmakers to see growth opportunities.
According to Laura Wilder with the Idaho Barley Commission, “It really gives us accurate information to provide to lawmakers and other decision-makers to help them understand the relevance of the industry to the state and help with their decision-making process.”
Idaho’s barley acreage and production is typically stable and the state is a leader in terms of national production.
