Apple snails are an invasive pest from South America and are considered to be a plague on water ways in Louisiana.
The snails are a major problem for crawfish production, and in extreme cases, have caused farmers to abandon their ponds.
They are prevalent across the Gulf Coast states, and it is reported they were released after growing too big and numerous as pests in home aquariums.
