The government paid a record $41.6 billion in different subsidies to farmers in 2020. That is double the amount they received in 2018.
The Environmental Working Group ran the numbers and says farmers received nearly $92 billion in 2018, 2019, and 2020. The payouts came from crop insurance, traditional crop supports, trade war assistance, and pandemic relief.
The subsidies were linked to a farm’s production, meaning the larger the farm, the more money received.
The group is calling for Congress to reject more subsidies and offer more transparency in future programs.
