There is trouble brewing for the 2023 Farm Bill. The Republican Study Committee is proposing ideas that could break it up.
The RSC wants to split public nutrition from the Farm Bill and create stricter work requirements for SNAP recipients, combine all child nutrition programs into block grants, and convert food stamps into discretionary block grants as well.
Right now, public nutrition accounts for three-quarters of all Farm Bill costs. The Republican Study Committee also proposed cutting federal support of crop insurance. That would subsidize premiums only for catastrophic losses and raise what farmers pay on premiums by 30 percent.
