Weeds are especially tough this time of year for growers in Western Illinois and Iowa. A BASF service representative says a lot of weeds in that area of the country started emerging around the same time and some control methods for both corn and soybeans failed to activate due to a lack of moisture.
Kurt Maertens tells Brownfield Ag News, “Everything happened at the same time. Tillage, planting, spraying, where we strung together four or five days of 90-plus temperatures. Great conditions for getting everything done, however all of our weeds started emerging at the same time.”
They say weeds, like water hemp, were harder to control and say it got tough fast mainly because of the unpredictable weather we have seen this year.
