Tariff talks are still underway, but what could it all mean for the ag community?

Trade discussions are already underway between Mexico, Canada, and President-elect Trump, but it is still unclear what this could all mean for the ag community.

Trump has spoken to Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum since his vow to put 25 percent tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods. He says it was a good conversation, and notes there were talks about security at the southern border. Ag officials have warned a trade war could spell trouble for farmers and ranchers. However, in a post to her social media accounts, Sheinbaum says she has no intentions of starting a trade war with the United States.

Trump also recently hosted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The meeting came just days after those newly announced tariffs. CNN reports Trudeau thought the two had an excellent conversation, and the two discussed many issues like trade and ways to stop the flow of drugs into the United States. Trudeau said he looked forward to future talks and that he would work with the United States. For now, it is a waiting game to see if those 25 percent tariffs come into play.
