The cattle markets have long been waiting for signs of expansion, but this month’s Cattle On Feed report offered little clues. Livestock analysts say the October report could offer more reliable information.
“When we get the October 1st inventory number, it will provide us with a breakout of the sex of the animals on feed. So that could provide us with a little indication about whether or not, you know, we’re seeing higher proportions of heffers being put on feed which could give us a little bit of an indication about the retention of heifers for addition to the breeding herd,” said Shayle Shagam.
This month’s report showed placements down one percent on the year while feedlot inventories are up one percent. The next report comes out October 25.
