The Pork Board is asking farmers to keep biosecurity top of mind this fall

It is a busy time for ag professionals and that means more animals on the move.

The Pork Board is urging farmers to polish off their biosecurity plans to keep animals and people safe at shows.

“I highly encourage them to not only monitor the health of their animals before they leave to go to a show and exposition but also take time when they have those animals in transport to make sure that they’re comfortable while they’re on the trailer. We know that it’s a stressful time in an animal’s life when they’re moved out of an environment that they’re accustomed to, and if they are facing some type of a disease challenge that maybe isn’t visible to the producer at that time, there’s an increased risk there that can lead to additional exposure,” said John Heins.

The Pork Board’s warning comes as High Path Avian Flu continues to spread across the United States. So far, 14 states have reported cases of the virus in dairy cattle, totaling nearly 300 herds across the nation. More than a dozen humans have also been diagnosed, but those cases appear to be mild.
