After seventeen years of being underground, cicadas are starting to emerge in the U.S., and in a matter of weeks, we could see and hear billions, if not trillions, of the insects.
The Brood X cicadas will enter fifteen states from Indiana to Georgia to New York.
They are already out in portions of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Also, there is a huge implication for agriculture. The females will implant their eggs on pencil-width branches or vines, causing them to split and winter. That ultimately causes the plant to turn brown and die.
So, if you are a tree fruit grower or a vineyard manager in those fifteen states, it is important to keep an eye out.
