Pork producers have a lot to be proud of when it comes to keeping their animals safe, and it appears their attention to biosecurity has paid off over the last several years.
A USDA study finds zero traces of trichinella, an infection from a parasitic nematode. The Department tested more than 3 million pork samples. The National Pork Producers Council says this is a nod to pork industry research, and says consumers can be confident they are eating a safe product. The research began because of trade concerns and a lack of testing in the United States.
It is not just safety the pork industry is focused on. They have made big strides in economic contributions. Last year alone, the industry helped provide more than half a million jobs, bringing in $37 million in income.
NPPC tells Brownfield Ag News it goes beyond the farm. They say the numbers also reflect the contributions to rural communities where the farms are located.
