Cherries are a popular year-round fruit but the U.S. came up short last year in production.
Just over 200 million pounds of tart cherries were grown in 2023, which is 41 million less than the year before. USDA numbers show about 1,000 fewer acres in production, and yield per acre was off by 1,000 pounds compared to 2022.
Prices were also lower, coming in around $1.62 per pound. Michigan leads the nation in tart cherry production, holding more than 13 times the acreage of Utah, which is the second-largest growing state.
