USDA to offer new stats for bison producers

USDA’s Market News Report says that it will now offer a weaned calf report for bison producers.

This industry information will assist in long-term planning and marketing efforts. Dave Carter of the National Bison Association talks about the demand for bison over the last decade and the importance of this new data.

“Our marketers kind of had to take their foot off the gas, because it didn’t do any good developing a new market if we can’t supply it. So, all of a sudden we ended up with this surplus of animals and you can’t fire up your marketing efforts overnight... this new weaned calf report is going to be very helpful,” he explains. “That’s going to be so valuable to us because it helps our marketers know what’s in the pipeline, what’s going to be come to harvest in the next 16-24 months, and so then they can start planning accordingly.”

A set date of when this will be available is still unknown, but Carter says that the effects of the pandemic on processing plants also hurt bison producers this year.
