A water war is currently underway in west Texas where one pecan-producing family says that their business is at risk.
Belding Farms produces nearly 5 million pounds of pecans each year, but the groundwater they have used since the 1960s is at risk.
One of their neighbors, Fort Stockton Holdings is looking to sell its share of the water to west Texas’s growing cities.
The 50 year deal would exchange the aquifer water for $261 million. However, Belding Farms says that there is a need for more rules and fees surrounding the export deal which they worry could swallow up their share of the water.
Experts warn there is not enough water for everyone, let alone agriculture to meet the state’s growing population projections.
