Wild ducks are posing a great threat to Iowa’s large poultry industry as they carry high path avian flu.
The virus has already been detected in more than a dozen commercial and backyard flocks in Iowa since March. A Wildlife Extension Specialist says wild ducks are the prominent carriers.
They are about to begin their biggest migration over the state. Hundreds of thousands of birds travel through Iowa on their way to breeding grounds in the Northern U.S. and Canada. The migration period can last for a month. The Iowa state veterinarian says the strain of avian flu cannot be taken lightly.
