Wolves have been found to be responsible for at least 40 livestock depredations so far in California this year.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says at least 13 of those took place in July and September. Of those 13 reports, 11 livestock kills were confirmed across 10 separate incidents. The majority of those attacks occurred within known pack regions, but two took place outside of those areas.
Meanwhile, Colorado is preparing livestock producers for calving season after the re-introduction of wolves in their state. The State and Wildlife Departments are teaming up with USDA to teach producers to co-exist with wolves and non-lethal mitigation. Those methods include range riding, carcass disposal, guardian dogs, and a flexible grant program. The state will release an additional 15 gray wolves this winter. This comes a year after they released 10.
